So there I was, thinking despondently that I didn’t know when I’d be able to make a new CD, despite having a clutch of new songs all ready to go, and I read a magazine article in which Peter Gabriel described the Incredible String Band funding a new album by asking their friends to help. I couldn’t do what they did (asking friends to cough up a fairly large amount to watch them recording the album – I’d HATE to be watched while recording!) but it sowed the seeds of an idea, and I’ve since had some ideas from some American musicians who have done something similar.
Here’s the plan:
If enough family, friends and fans could pay for an album ahead of it being made, I could afford to make it! Now, some of you will only ever want one copy of the album, which is great, but some of you I know buy multiple copies and give them away as presents, so here’s a sliding scale of what contributions you could make and what you’d get back (because I’m not expecting anything for free, and I don’t want to be in debt to anyone for any amount of cash).

All contributors will be invited to the launch party (or parties).

If you have another amount of money in mind and would like to discuss how this might work, please contact me.

The plan is to get started just as soon as there’s enough money in the kitty (I’ve already had promises of enough to start recording, although this is the first official start of the “campaign”) and aim for an early autumn release of the album.

Your big thing is that you’ll have to trust my integrity (and administrative abilities), but I promise I will do all I can to get the project underway. If I don’t manage to raise the full amount I’d like then I’ll have to make some compromises along the way, but I’m hoping to do this all as ethically as possible, paying musicians, choosing eco friendly packaging, keeping travelling costs down and so on.

I hope you don’t mind being asked – I won’t, of course, mind if you can’t help!
